I have a saying here in my heart, a quote?by the author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. ??Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of you!? ??I have actually personalized it to: ?Live so that when my children (and now grandchildren) think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of me.?? This is how I live my life.? Integrity is one of my primary core values.
Integrity is synonymous with honesty.??I did not grow up with this value.? In my growing up household honesty, like being visible, was something that tended to get one in trouble. ?I learned to lie at an early age, most often by simply being silent and saying nothing. ?But as fate would have it, a beautiful spunky mischievous little girl, Jo, befriended me in elementary school. ?She and her amazing family accepted me into their home and lives with open arms. Her parents Charlene and Clancy did not lecture me on integrity or honesty.? They overlooked my flaws and chose to find the good in me (good I did not even know existed!). They chose to model integrity and demonstrate it with great love, patience and tenderness. It was and is simply who they are.
In the years that have followed, if I had to describe integrity it would be Charlene or Clancy. ?Although Clancy has gone on ahead of us, I am blessed to say I still have Charlene in my life.? She has modeled so many things that matter the most for me:? How to Mother; How to love; How to forgive; How to let go; How to laugh; How to tell a story; and How to write; and so many things I have long since forgotten. I shutter to think where I would have been without her!
It was not always easy to live a transparent authentic life of integrity!? Getting started was the most difficult for me.? I had such excellent role models it grew easier the more I praticed.
May I humble ask a couple of questions and offer a couple of dots from my rear view mirror I just connected (thanks Steve Jobs for that image in my mind!)
- What are your core values?
- Is integrity one of them ??
- Integrity ? complete honesty with yourself is?a good?place to start. ?Sometimes it is painful (I have not always liked what I have seen!)
- Love yourself
- Make the decision
- Have a role model
- Find a mentor
- Keep short accounts
- When you are make a mistake apologize (especialy to yourself), forgive, and forget
- Start your day with intention and end your day in gratitude
- Surround yourself with others committed to the same values!
- If you had a Charlene in your life, write them a note to say thank you!
- Do not quit
- Live the life in your version of H. Jackson Brown?s quote you may never know who is watching!!!
If this is how you already live, I want you to stand up (yes, right now!!) put your shoulders back, and acknowledge yourself. ?Well done!!!
Now. take it to the next level!
I would love to hear from you!!
With so much beauty and grace,
Lori
