First Flu Death this season in California reported by CDPH

(Best Syndication News) - The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced the first death in California related the current influenza season. The death was an adult male in his late 30?s from Kern County. The CDPH made the announcement on December 22, 2011.

The CDPH is reminding California residents to get their flu vaccine. The health agency said that everyone over the age of 6 months is recommended to get the seasonal flu vaccine. This flu vaccine is reported to protect against the H1N1 virus strain.

Those that are at high risk for flu complications should make an extra effort to get the yearly seasonal flu vaccine. Pregnant women, people with chronic disease, people with diabetes should consider getting vaccinated against the flu.

The CDC estimates that 3,000 to 49,000 people die each year in the United States from flu related complications. The flu season tends to peak between January and March.
Currently the CDPH reports low influenza activity in the state.
