Video: At sea: Message in a lobster pot?

>>> an amazing story from ireland where they have found the remains of lobster pots that belonged to a massachusetts lobsterman and were lost during the so-called perfect storm back in october of 1991 . and we know they're his because rosemary hill of waterville found a tag with his name on it. the storm became the stuff of legend in new england, thanks to a book and a movie with george clooney . scientists say the 3,000 drift across the ocean is uncommon but not impossible. meantime the lobsterman had given up all hope they would be seen again.

Rapper Tinie Tempah's big ambition for U.S. "Disc-Overy" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? At the age of 23, British rapper Tinie Tempah has already sold a million records with his debut album "Disc-Overy."

Now he's hoping to conquer the United States with a new breed of hip-hop music through the release this week of his drum and bass hit British single "Pass Out" and a performance on TV singing contest "The X Factor".

Reuters spoke with Tinie Tempah about his career so far and British influences on the U.S. rap music scene.

Q: Your music is at the core of a new wave of hip-hop coming out of London. How were you influenced by the London scene?

A: "In London, everything is interlinked, you can't avoid it, so it just became a natural thing to put drum and bass or garage in your music. I just wanted my album to appeal to everybody across the board. I didn't go out there to intentionally make it sound different 'cause I wanted to be edgy, I just wanted to make what I know and what I like."

Q: Why do you think people have responded to your music in the way that they have?

A: "People, especially in England, were just happy that there was a black British young kid who was able to sign a record deal and transcend the stereotypes of a black British rapper -- urban in a hoodie, can't talk properly, looks like a ragamuffin. I think people were rooting for me to transcend that."

Q: Do you think the artists topping music charts are being influenced by the new wave of British hip-hop?

A: "When 'Pass Out' came out and people started trying to do 'Pass Out'-esque type music -- and I'm not saying Jay-Z and Kanye had a listen to us -- but when I listen to "Ni**as in Paris", it sounds like it's definitely been inspired or influenced by what's been going on in the U.K."

Q: Was there a time that you thought success wasn't going to happen?

A: "The MOBOs (Music of Black Origin Awards, in U.K.) 2009, I was sitting at home while I was a fully active emcee but wasn't nominated for anything, and watching all my mates sitting there in suits, drinking champagne, going up for awards, I was like, 'is this even going to happen for us?' But then the next year was a really good year for us. You need to experience a little bit of bad, it makes you appreciate the good a lot more and it makes you realize how hard you actually have to work."

Q: Why did you release "Written in the Stars" as the first single in the U.S. after the success of "Pass Out" in the

U.K.?

A: "America definitely embraced what the Brits have to offer in terms of this new wave of music, and how eclectic and experimental it is. But I just don't think at that time that they were ready for 'Pass Out.' Now that Jay-Z and Kanye have done 'Watch The Throne' and there's a little bit more edgier music like Skrillex and Diplo, I think people are going to be more ready for it. 'Written in the Stars' was my strongest card at the time...it took me everywhere in America. Now that they understand me a little more, I think we should give 'Pass Out' a go and see what happens."

Q: At the age of 23 with more than a million records sold, how do you keep yourself grounded?

A: "The thing that keeps me going and that keeps me grounded is longevity, and never wanting it to end. You don't want to go to rehab or to stop thinking about the music and stop taking pride in it. We still have a long way to go, this is not ending any time soon."

Q: How have your parents responded to your success?

A: "They're very happy. I'm from a traditionally African background, things like this don't usually happen, it's usually that you go to school, go to college, get your degree, be a doctor, lawyer, as long as you're earning 100 grand a year. Me deviating from the norm was a little bit daring, gutsy, and they were more worried than anything. Music is just a very volatile thing."

Ahead of Russian elections, quashed Ossetia vote embarrasses Moscow

The crushing of an apparently legitimate election victory in South Ossetia, a key client state of Moscow, could bring a fresh wave of unwanted attention to Russia's own problematic democracy.

A bizarre electoral upset in Russia's tiny protectorate of South Ossetia, a breakaway province of Georgia, has thrown the little republic into chaos and brought acute embarrassment to its sponsors in the Kremlin.

On the cusp of Russia's own crucial cycle of elections, the blatant crushing of an apparently legitimate election victory in a key client state of Moscow could bring a fresh wave of unwanted attention to Russia's own problematic democracy.

The trouble began last Sunday, when South Ossetia's official election commission declared former education minister and anticorruption outsider?Alla Dzhioyeva decisively ahead in presidential elections, having won 57 percent of the votes with most of the ballots counted. The problem was that Ms. Dzhioyeva's opponent, Anatoly Bibilov, who was trailing far behind with 40 percent, had been personally endorsed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

On Tuesday the republic's Supreme Court met behind closed doors and declared the polls null and void, citing "irregularities" that have yet to be spelled out. The decision barred Dzhioyeva from participating in any future elections.

In a move that some Russian analysts say Moscow will come to regret, Russia's Foreign Ministry subsequently issued an official statement endorsing the annulment of the election results, saying that Russia favors maintaining a "calm and stable situation" in South Ossetia.

Dzhioyeva's supporters took to the streets the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali on Wednesday and Thursday to protest, bringing a tough response from riot police who fired shots into the air and physically prevented protesters from approaching government buildings. The?Kremlin dispatched a special emissary, Sergei Vinokurov, to the region in hopes of negotiating a solution.

"The people have spoken; 17,000 voters [out of 28,000 registered voters in the tiny republic] supported me," said Dzhioyeva, reached by telephone in Tskhinvali on Thursday. "Both the official Central Election Commission, and international election observers [including Russian ones] declared our elections to be basically free and fair. That gives us grounds to believe that we have won."

But Russia, which fought a war with Georgia in 2008 to preserve the independence of South Ossetia and another rebel republic, does not appear to see things that way.

Russell Brand: Happily Married & Thinking Babies With Katy Perry (omg!)

Russell Brand visits 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' Dec. 1, 2011 -- The Ellen DeGeneres Show

More than a year after his wedding to pop star Katy Perry, Russell Brand is starting to think about babies.

On Thursday, while sitting for an interview for Friday's "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the British comedian and actor said he longs to hear the pitter-patter of little feet.

"Katy says you are going to try and start a family. Are you going to have a family?" Ellen asked.

"I would like one. I love those little babies in the beginning," Russell answered.

"Yeah, that's how they start out," Ellen chimed in.

"They're so lovely in that bit. Me and Katy are godparents to two twin boys. They're called Sam and Donovan," Russell said of the 1-year-olds.

Russell went on to say he's made some observations about babies.

"At first they were boring. They were just essentially little fluid factories, generating fluids -- no regard for what I was wearing," he said. "Now, they are interesting. They smile and look at me and wonder... I'm just observing them like I'm a scientist."

"I can learn from them," Russell continued. "Me and Katy are their godparents, which means we're responsible for their spiritual growth. Should be interesting."

During his "Ellen" visit, Russell also hit back at the rumors he and Katy have split.

"There are always rumors aren't there? In the end you have to just not engage with Internet technology, which is difficult because [of] a lot of the nude women websites I quite enjoy," he said with a laugh. "But they've had to go. I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar. Yeah. I am really happily married."

Component shortage reportedly limiting iPhone 4S supplies (Appolicious)

At least one analyst is advising investors that supplies of the iPhone 4S are going to continue to be limited through the holiday season, citing low supplies on a ?key component? in the device.

Apple Insider has the story, in which analyst Ashok Kumar of Rodman & Renshaw explains in a note to investors to expect constrained iPhone 4S supplies through 2012, even as demand for the device remains very high. Kumar didn?t explain what the component was that is supposedly keeping iPhone 4S supplies low, however.

Kumar pegs the number of iPhone 4S units he expects to be sold in the last quarter of 2011 to be around 30 million, which he expects to come in below Wall Street expectations. Apple has had trouble meeting all the demand for the iPhone 4S even since it launched in the U.S. It has been reported that customers have been forced to wait weeks to receive the devices. AT&T and Sprint customers were said to have waited around three weeks, while Verizon customers had to wait as much as a month after the phone?s October 14 launch date to receive it.

Even so, demand for the iPhone 4S hasn?t slowed. All three U.S. carriers reported record pre-sales for the devices and Apple itself said it had sold 1 million units in the 24 hours after the device was released. Through October and much of November, customers were waiting for the iPhone 4S mostly because so many people wanted one.

Kumar also had a few other things to say on Apple?s smartphone handset. Currently, Apple holds 85 percent of the ?premium? smartphone market, which Kumar believes is probably the peak of its performance. Instead, he expects more growth to happen in smartphones at the other end of the spectrum, with lower-priced handsets. He said in his note to investors that Apple needs to consider a lower-cost ?purpose-built? device, although he also said that other smartphone makers don?t really have anything to compete in that sphere.

Apple does have something of a lower-cost iPhone model in the iPhone 3GS, which is currently available for 99 cents when users enter into a two-year contract with a cellular carrier. It?s also doing pretty well. As Apple Insider points out, the 3GS was the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. after the iPhone 4 in the third quarter of 2011, according to the NPD Group. That put it ahead of Android device makers such as HTC and Samsung, and head of Nokia, a long-time handset leader.

Despite reports of low supplies of the iPhone 4S, we?ll have to see how Apple?s devices actually fare during the holiday season. Expectations and demand for the 4S are still pretty high going into 2012; we?ll have to see if Apple has adequately prepared for the holidays.
