Burying the hatchet in the laser lab

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Experts have been heavily discussing why exactly electrically insulating materials insulate as they do. Based on different mechanisms, a classification scheme for insulators has been in use since the 1960s -- a theoretical one. However, it has been yet impossible to distinctly classify all insulators due to a lack of suitable experimental approaches. A team of physicists from Kiel University (Germany) and the University of Colorado in Boulder (USA) has now developed a new method to distinguish different insulators unambiguously.

The study was published in the online journal Nature Communications.

No notebook, no cell phone, no digital camera would be functional without electrical insulators. The hunt for precise knowledge about state-of-the-art or future insulators is just as rapid as the development of new, better electronic devices. For this reason, insulator research is currently one of the hottest topics in solid-state science.

Following the common scientific procedures in physics, such insulators are first described using universal equations and simulated by computer models. The theoretical results about materials then need to be verified by experiments in the lab. It is this experimental verification that failed for a number of insulators in the past. ?For many years, expert discussions went round and round without any final answer about the insulator class," says project leader Kai Rossnagel from the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics of Kiel University. The study presented now provides a completely new experimental approach to classifying the insulating behavior of materials objectively.

The science team made use of a special effect: some electrical conductors turn into insulators when strongly cooled down. At the same time, their electric state changes, and when the materials warm up again, their electronic properties also change. The scientists now use the speed of this change to distinguish different classes of insulators.

Inconceivably small time scales are applied in this method: For the classification, they use a laser beam camera to produce a film from individual images taken within femtoseconds. For comparison: If you took one picture every femtosecond for a period of one second, you would end up with 1.000.000.000.000.000 single pictures, while a regular film camera takes only 24 images per second. ?The electronic changes visible in the film, take about one to 50 femtoseconds for some materials and 100 to 200 femtoseconds for others," Rossnagel explains. In this manner, the scientists can distinguish one insulator class from another.

One of the heavily discussed insulator materials, titanium diselenide (TiSe2), was now precisely classified. On top of the precise classification of TiSe2, the scientists gave the first experimental evidence for a new class of insulators, the so-called excitonic insulators. ?We believe that our results may terminate the discussion about titanium diselenide after decades"; says Rossnagel but admits: ?Only after several years of cross-checking our results, we will know for sure if our method is as useful as we think now."

The new classification method uses a camera technique presented by the same team of researchers in the journal Nature in March 2011. It is called ?femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with extreme UV radiation." The current study was the first systematic application of the new camera technique to a scientific question. The study was carried out within the Kiel Nano and Surface Science, one out of four major research themes at Kiel University. It was funded on the German side by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

Microfluidic device: Hundreds of biochemical analyses on a single chip

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Scientists at Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne and the University of Geneva have developed a microfluidic device smaller than a domino that can simultaneously measure up to 768 biomolecular interactions.

Inside our cells, molecules are constantly binding and separating from one another. It's this game of constant flux that drives gene expression asides essentially every other biological process.

Understanding the specific details of how these interactions take place is thus crucial to our overall understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of living organisms. There are millions of possible combinations of molecules, however; determining all of them would be a Herculean task. Various tools have been developed to measure the degree of affinity between a strand of DNA and its transcription factor. They provide an indication of the strength of the affinity between them.

"Commercial" devices, however, have one main drawback: many preliminary manipulations are necessary before an experiment can be carried out, and even then, the experiment can only focus on a dozen interactions at a time.

Microns-wide channels

As part of his doctoral research at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Sebastian Maerkl designed a device that he named "MITOMI" -- a small device containing hundreds of microfluidic channels equipped with pneumatic valves. This week Maerkl, who is now an assistant professor in EPFL's Bioengineering Institute, is publishing an article describing the next step in the evolution of the device in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The new version, "k-MITOMI," was developed in the context of the SystemsX.ch RTD DynamiX in cooperation with the University of Geneva.

This microfluidic device has 768 chambers, each one with a valve that allows DNA and transcription factors to interact in a very carefully controlled manner. "In traditional methods, we generally manage to determine if an interaction takes place or not, and then we restart the experiment with another gene or another transcription factor," Maerkl explains. "Our device goes much further, because it allows us to measure the affinity and kinetics of the interaction."

The strength of the device lies in a sort of "push-button" in its microreactors. A protein substrate is immobilized on the device; above it circulates a solution containing DNA moelcules. The push-button is activated at regular intervals of a few milliseconds, trapping protein-DNA complexes that form on the surface of the device. "Then we close the lid, and fluorescence reveals the exact number of bound molecules," explains Maerkl. "We can also observe how long these molecules remain bound."

In addition to providing quantitative kinetic information, the k-MITOMI device can work in a "massively parallel" manner. Each of the 768 independent chambers can simultaneously analyze different molecule pairs. It can also be used to synthesize proteins in vitro, with a massive reduction in time and number of manipulations compared to the traditional method, which involves producing proteins inside a living organism such as a bacterium, purifying, and putting them in contact with the genes to be studied.

"The number of protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions that remain to be characterized is phenomenal. Our device not only allows us to accelerate the acquisition of this information, which is crucial to our understanding of living organisms, but it also meets a need for the production of specific proteins," adds Maerkl.

Oregon State Beavers treated to In-N-Out Burger by coach after win over UCLA

Oregon State coach Mike Riley served up an upset to UCLA on Saturday, then celebrated by serving up In-N-Out Burgers for his Beavers team.

"Just finished our business in LA, now it's time for a little fun, headed to In-N-Out as a team! #GoBeavs2012" Riley tweeted.

A little more than an hour later, the coach sent a picture of himself outside the Southern California fast-food staple, open wallet in hand.

"We weren't joking, double-doubles for everyone! Great win!" Riley added.

The Beavers knocked off No. 19 UCLA 27-20 behind 384 passing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Sean Mannion. It was Oregon State's second win over a Top 25 opponent this season, as they knocked off No. 13 Wisconsin 10-7 on Sept. 8 in Corvallis.

The coach was later asked if he really did buy food for the entire team.

"Of course," Riley tweeted, "these guys deserve it!!!"

"Youth Pill" Research Results Released at San Antonio Obesity ...

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?It's been called the fountain of youth. They say it can reduce body fat, increase lean muscle mass, boost mood, strengthen bones, heighten sex drive, give you plenty of energy and get rid of wrinkles? making you look and feel decades ? not years, but decades ? younger. Athletes have been using it for years to give them a competitive edge? women are just now discovering its rejuvenating promise, and celebrities from Los Angeles to New York have been visiting some of the most expensive clinics in the world to get their monthly supply. It's called human growth hormone, or HGH. But is it really the fountain of youth?

The History: In the early 1950s, Doctors began using HGH as a radical new treatment for children suffering from severe growth deficiency. Through the 1960s and '70s, interest in this powerful hormone grew, but because of its extremely limited supply and astronomical expense, clinical research was scant? personal use was almost unheard of. Then, in 1981, researchers developed a synthetic version of this miracle hormone? supplies grew? costs were reduced? ?and the HGH revolution exploded around the world.

Athletes were the first to embrace HGH. They used it to help their heart, lungs and muscles perform better to gain an advantage over the competition. In fact, it gave them such an unfair edge that the use of synthetic human growth hormone was eventually banned by virtually every organized sporting body in the world.

The "It" Formula: As popular as HGH was with athletes, growth hormone therapy didn't go mainstream until women discovered that HGH may reduce body fat, increase muscle tone, smooth out wrinkled skin and had the distinct ability to make you look and feel years younger. Today, celebrity doctors regularly charge as much as fifteen hundred dollars a month to administer growth hormone to their most privileged of clientele? making HGH the chosen "youth formula" of the very, very rich and famous.

Athletes? The very rich and famous? Why should I care about this expensive stuff? you ask? Well, there's been an incredible breakthrough that has the potential of making your life? each and every one of your lives? better. It's big, and I mean REALLY BIG, news? and we'll get there in a minute? I promise. But before we do, let's start off a little rudimentary science and history that will hopefully answer a few of your questions ?

The Science: Human growth hormone is a 191 amino acid, single chain peptide hormone. It's manufactured deep within the brain? in the pituitary gland? where it's released into the bloodstream and travels throughout the body. It passes into your fat cells and can actually cause them to shrink. It enters your muscle cells, stimulating lean muscle growth so you look more toned, even if you haven't been working out. When it reaches the skin it maintains healthy blood flow, ramps up collagen production, and strengthens the underlying substructure of the skin's critical architecture? keeping your skin firm, tight and smooth? which is why so many experts call HGH the "youth" hormone.

The Problem: Unfortunately, our body's natural production of HGH begins to decline in our mid-twenties. And for the rest of our lives, our levels of human growth hormone just keep going down. That's why some experts believe that if it were possible to keep growth hormone at peak levels within the human body, we could seriously delay the signs of aging? the wrinkles, the achy joints, the trouble sleeping, increased body fat, decreased sex drive, etc. ? the things we all begin to experience as we get older.

The Controversy: So how do you maintain youthful growth hormone levels? That's where the controversy begins. Some doctors argue in favor of synthetic HGH injections to help people regain the growth hormone levels they had in their youth. Others fear that introducing synthetic human growth hormone into the body will upset the natural production of HGH. However, almost all experts agree that stimulating the pituitary gland to produce its own natural growth hormone at more youthful levels would be the preferred option. But is it possible? Can you encourage your pituitary gland to produce more growth hormone as you age, safely, without prescription drugs or synthetic HGH injections?

The Breakthrough: Until recently, the answer to that question would have been a resounding "no." However, in September of 2012, more than 500 of the most highly respected scientists from around the globe gathered in San Antonio, Texas to discuss the latest research at the prestigious Obesity Society's 30th Annual Scientific Meeting. At this exclusive conference, a group of experts from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center made the results of a double-blind clinical trial public for the first time: an orally administered compound capable of increasing mean serum (blood) growth hormone levels by 682% had finally been discovered.

The Pennington study was groundbreaking in its scope, because it showed, for the first time, that a proprietary combination of amino acids can stimulate the pituitary gland to increase the body's own HGH levels ? a mean increase of ?682% in both men and women and across an appropriately wide age range. But that's not all. In another more recent study, this same oral compound was shown to significantly increase both VO2 max and metabolic rate? providing a preliminary explanation to the question "how may increasing a person's HGH level help them burn fat and lose weight?"

In short, after more than 30 years of time-consuming, detailed research, scientists have finally developed an affordable oral formula that encourages the pituitary gland to increase growth hormone production at a more youthful rate, naturally, without dangerous drugs or synthetic hormone injections. It's called SeroVital?-hgh. And it's going to change your life.

So What's the Catch? Well, there are three. First, as with HGH injections, SeroVital-hgh is not a "magic bullet" but one part of a healthy lifestyle choice including a sensible diet and exercise regimen. And, just like HGH injections, you have to remember to renew your monthly supply.

Second, you have to take SeroVital-hgh on an empty stomach. That means you either have to take it first thing in the morning and then not eat anything for two hours, or take it at night, at least two hours after your last meal... before you go to bed.

And last but not least, while SeroVital is far less expensive than prescription HGH injections, it's still not cheap? SeroVital will cost you about $100 a month. But is it worth it? To most people, reducing wrinkles, decreasing body fat, increasing lean muscle mass, strengthening bones, boosting mood, while giving you plenty of energy and improving sex drive is a no brainer. However, make no mistake about it, the "established" medical community would say its benefits are largely anecdotal, with research that's preliminary. But there's no denying that something that has a chance of making you look and feel decades, not years, but DECADES younger, is... at the very least... irresistible.

So where can you get SeroVital-hgh? In the next few months, it will be available at Sephora and Ulta stores across the U.S. Can't wait? From Nigeria to Athens, Muslim protests rumble on

DUBAI (Reuters) - Muslims protested in Nigeria, Iran, Greece and Turkey on Sunday to show anti-Western anger against a film and cartoons insulting Islam had not dissipated.

As delegates from around the world gathered in New York for a U.N. General Assembly where the clash between free speech and blasphemy is bound to be raised, U.S. flags were once again burning in parts of the Muslim world.

Iranian students chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" outside the French embassy in Tehran in protest at the decision by satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to publish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, days after widespread protests - some deadly - against a film made in the United States.

Shi'ite Muslims in the Nigerian town of Katsina burned U.S., French and Israeli flags and a religious leader called for protests to continue until the makers of the film and cartoons are punished.

In Pakistan, where fifteen people were killed in protests on Friday, a government minister has offered $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of the short, amateurish video "The Innocence of Muslims". Calls have increased for a U.N. measure outlawing insults to Islam and blasphemy in general.

In Athens, some protesters hurled bottles of water, stones and shoes at police who responded with teargas. Calm returned when demonstrators interrupted the protest to pray.

ON ALERT

Protests around the world were relatively small and calm, but Western embassies remained on alert after the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in one of the first protests, on September 11.

The upsurge of Muslim anger - just weeks before U.S. elections - have confronted President Barack Obama with a setback yet in his efforts to keep the "Arab Spring" revolutions from fuelling a new wave of anti-Americanism.

In U.S. ally Turkey, a secular Muslim state often seen as a bridge between the Islamic world and the West, protesters set fire to U.S. and Israeli flags on Sunday.

"May the hands that touch Mohammad break," chanted some 200 protesters before peacefully dispersing.

"We will certainly not allow uncontrolled protests, but we will not just grin and bear it when Islam's prophet is insulted," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told party members at the weekend.

"The protests in the Muslim world must be measured, and the West should show a determined stance against Islamophobia."

Military-style tactics seen in US Consulate siege

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The heavily armed extremists who laid siege to the U.S. Consulate in Libya used military-style tactics that may have steered Americans toward a waiting ambush, U.S. officials said Friday as they pieced together details about how the compound was overrun.

U.S. intelligence indicates that 50 or more people, many of them masked, were responsible for the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Gun trucks provided added firepower. The attackers set up a perimeter, controlling access in and out of the compound. A first wave of attacks sent the Americans fleeing to a fallback building, where a second group of extremists beset them with precise mortar fire.

Intelligence reports were still coming in, but officials told The Associated Press that what may have initially seemed like a protest over an anti-Islam movie that had spun out of control now showed the hallmarks of a more sophisticated operation.

In a country coming off a civil war, a level of battlefield savvy does not prove the attack on the compound was planned well in advance. How much planning went into the operation and whether it could have been detected or prevented remain unanswered questions, officials said.

The attacks killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, diplomat Sean Smith and two former Navy SEALs, who U.S. officials said were security officers guarding diplomatic officials. Stevens was visiting Benghazi from Tripoli to preside over the opening of an "American Space" cultural center.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss intelligence reports. They stressed that even now authorities do not have a clear understanding of exactly what happened in Benghazi. FBI agents from New York and Washington were in Libya investigating the attack.

"What happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday. "And we will not rest until we have tracked down and brought to justice the terrorists who murdered four Americans."

Officials have not singled out one responsible group, but have focused their attention on Ansar al-Shariah, a Libyan militant group led by a former detainee at the U.S. military-run prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Since the civil war that ousted Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year, the country has been awash with rebels, militias and terrorists. Weaponry is easy to come by, both from the former regime, from weapons depots looted during the war, and from foreign powers that armed the rebellion. The origin of the weapons used in the assault on the U.S. compound was unclear, officials said.

Whether the attack was premeditated carries both political and intelligence significance.

From an intelligence standpoint, the longer an operation was in the works ahead of the attack, the more the U.S. government will face scrutiny for not anticipating and preparing for it.

Politically, Republicans have accused President Barack Obama's administration of misreading the assault as an outgrowth of Middle East demonstrations over an American-made Internet video insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad. They have also criticized the protection of the consulate, particularly since the attack fell on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a date when authorities are normally on alert for attacks.

White House spokesman Jay Carney has said there was no evidence the attack was premeditated. Obama has said extremists used the protests as an excuse to attack.

A spontaneous protest that turns violent is harder to predict and respond to.

"The intelligence agencies are still not confident enough to represent to us whether it was planned in advance or taking the opportunity of a spontaneous protest," Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Friday.

Investigators say some of the people involved have a "hodgepodge of affiliations with multiple militant groups," making it hard to hold one particular militia or movement responsible, said a senior U.S. intelligence official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to be quoted publicly describing the investigation.

Wanis al-Sharef, who was Libya's deputy interior minister until he was fired after the attacks, said a small group of lightly armed gunmen were the first to gather outside the compound. They were then joined by a crowd of civilians protesting the film. Finally, a larger group of heavily armed men arrived with gun vehicles and grenade launchers. That final group was responsible for the siege.

Ansar al-Shariah has repeatedly denied being any part of the attack, but eyewitnesses and security officials said the group's militiamen were among the gunmen who joined the demonstration outside the compound. The group claimed its fighters were only in the Benghazi area providing security at Jalaa Hospital. But that's more than three miles from the U.S. compound, which lies on the outskirts of the city in a rural area.

One witness said he was detained by Ansar al-Shariah members during the protest because he was taking pictures of one of their leaders.

Whoever they were, the attackers stormed the main building and set it on fire. One U.S. official described the militants striking the front of the building first, distracting security, while a second group struck then from the rear. Many people escaped and fled to an annex to the east.

About an hour after the assault began, American and Libyan forces retook control of the compound and brought everyone to the annex. Rescue teams headed their way.

Intelligence indicates the gunmen broke off into teams to block certain roads away from the compound, officials said. Whether that changed the route or otherwise influenced how the Americans moved through the streets remains unclear, but one U.S. official said the tactic was being looked at as an indication of battlefield strategy and sophistication.

As the Americans waited to be rescued from the annex, that building came under mortar fire. Mortars are short-range bombs that launch in high arcs. Aiming them can be a matter of trial and error. But U.S. officials said mortars were landing directly on the roof of the annex.

That, officials said, indicated an experienced fighter, a well-planned assault or both.

Query by Nicky S: I have to create and supply a 5-8 moment speech on something for my manifeste talking course.?
I have no thought what to talk about, any concepts?

Greatest response:

Response by Kyouchou
Do it on a thing you know a great deal about and are involved in, it will make it less difficult for you to talk about it. For example, if you enjoy professional basketball, chat about the sport, your preferred group/people, and so forth. Or if you truly like vehicles, talk about automobiles, or racing, or engines. Or if you enjoy astronomy, speak about some of the excellent advances that have been produced in the very last 20 several years and how our knowledge of the universe has expanded.

Writers are usually advised to ?compose what you know?, and when you are presented total liberty more than a speech you really should follow the exact same advice: speak about what you know a thing about.

Know greater? Leave your possess response in the feedback!

Verizon CFO buries his head in the sand, claims unlimited data is 'going by the wayside'

"La la la la. I can't hear you." Verizon's CFO, Fran Shammo, might've just as well made those comments with his hands firmly cupped over his ears, as the firm's chief number cruncher told attendees at today's Goldman Sachs investor conference, "Unlimited is just a word, it doesn't really mean anything." While Sprint and T-Mobile would certainly take issue with that statement, Shammo then dug the hole deeper by saying, "That whole unlimited thing, I think, is going by the wayside." These comments were made in the context of Shammo playing up the carrier's shared data plans, wherein he explained his belief that consumers "think they consume a lot more data than they really do." Shammo also revealed that Verizon has converted more subscribers and devices over to the new scheme than it'd initially anticipated.

Naturally, change within any industry takes time, but now that Sprint is in a position to offer unlimited data at a meaningful speed and T-Mobile has climbed aboard the bandwagon, Verizon may have to change its tune if a significant number of consumers decide that unlimited isn't dead after all. You can view the entire transcript at the source link below, but consider this: would you take unlimited plans into consideration when shopping between carriers, or is Mr. Shammo right that consumers really don't use that much data? Interior Design Tricks And Tips To Decorate Your Home ? Long Live ...

Think outside of the box when it comes to your headboard. You can make a strong design statement by creating your own one-of-a-kind headboard. Use your imagination. Anything like an old door, a garden gate, an oriental screen, or metal ceiling tiles can be repurposed as an unique headboard.

Use your own photos as artwork. As a cheaper and more personal way to adorn your walls, use photos that you?ve taken. Either have prints made and frame them or use one of the many photo-to-canvas providers to have your photo made into a gallery canvas. If you are more tech-savvy, you can alter your photos in software to make them look even more like artwork.

When you are getting ready to paint a room, paint just a portion of a wall first, and wait a few days before you decide. You can avoid the hassle and added cost of re-painting a poor color choice by seeing how you feel about it after a couple of days.

When you are arranging furniture in your living room, position them in a way that will facilitate the flow of foot traffic. You would not want to dodge your furniture every time you turn around. If furniture pieces are in the middle of the room, be sure to allow enough space between them so that you can easily walk between them.

Use mirrors when decorating your home. Mirrors can be very handy, especially if you live in a small space. A mirror on one or two walls isn?t just convenient for fixing your hair on the go, they can give the illusion of more space. One strategically placed mirror can do wonders for opening up a room.

Whenever taking on an interior-design project on a very small room, it might be a good idea to install a sheet mirror for one of the walls. This gives the appearance that your room is actually twice as big as it really is, which can greatly enhance the look of the room.

Lighting is crucial in any interior design. Adding additional lighting will make any room appear larger. If you make use of all available natural light and add additional lighting, you will make any room seem larger than it really is. Light is the key when designing to make rooms seem larger.

Try decorating with maps. Maps are a fun and inexpensive way to decorate a room. You can frame them and hang them on the wall as art or you can adhere them directly to your walls as wallpaper. They are great for children?s rooms and home offices. Make the decor more personal by using maps of places you?ve been, your hometown, or places you dream of going.

When you are shopping for a computer desk, you should always think more about the chair you will be sitting in and less about the desk. You need to have a comfortable chair to sit in especially if you plan on spending a lot of time behind the computer working or surfing the web.

Make a sketch of the floor plan that you want to install before you put any furniture in your home. This will help you to reduce the amount of shifting, which can take a large toll on your back. Planning in advance is the best way for you to organize your interior design project.

The article above has hopefully helped you see that there are many aspects to interior design, but no really wrong or right way to approach it. Take notes and don?t let yourself get overwhelmed with all of the information you have just read. Apply the tips to your designs and you are sure to see a more put together home.

I trust this has been useful for info on oil paintings for sale.

Fujifilm X-E1 hands-on (video)

Fujifilm XE1 handson

Sure the XF1's nice to look at, but the real star of Fujifilm's 2012 Photokina lineup has to be the X-E1. The X-Pro1's little sibling offers up most of the functionality of its bigger, pricier brother -- save for its inclusion just an electronic viewfinder -- into a body that's roughly a third smaller. That said, this is hardly a compact mirrorless -- the X-E1's still got a bit of girth and weight to it, compared to some of the smaller entries in the field. Still, it feels nice in the hand and isn't likely to weigh down your shooting -- particularly for those accustom to using a larger DSLR. It's also worth pointing out, right off the bat, that the retro-styled interchangeable lens camera is significantly cheaper, running you $700 less than the X-Pro-1.

Flip the camera over and you get a 2.8-inch 460k-dot LCD. Just above the display is a devoted button that will pop up the retractable flash directly above. The X-E1 will be hitting stores in November, carrying a $1,000 price tag. Buy a kit with a lens and you'll still come in $300 under the X-Pro1's $1,700 price tag, making for a full-featured and great looking little mirrorless for a lot less money.
